Today’s Sacramento Bee has an editorial from Dan Weintraub about how the California inititiative process works because workers comp rates have come down. (Here is a link to the article that does not require you to subscribe.)
The problem with Mr. Weintraub’s argument is that he lacks understanding of the insurance industry. See my prior posts on workers compensation. While rates have fallen, not even the doctors, a group that pushed for change, likes this new system. Doctors are threatening to stop treating injured workers. How on earth does Mr. Weintraub think that this means the system worked?
California’s workers comp system is a mess. It was a mess before our governor and it will be a mess after our governor. Someone with some knowledge of insurance needs to come up with a system that works. Until then, its outrageous for people like Mr. Weintraub to claim that this system is any type of success.
