A Georgia woman received a $9,000,000 verdict after being raped and robbed at her apartment complex. The amount reflects what the plaintiff’s attorney asked the jury for and is 30 times more than was offered by the defendant.
This is an interesting case. The defense admitted liability half way through the trial. Basically, the defense admitted that they were at fault, but it was just a matter of damages. How much was she entitled to? In this case, the jury thought she was entitled to a lot!
These types of cases are difficult. In California, you do not have to prove only that you were injured. But, if you are the victim of a crime, you have to prove that the landlord was aware of prior similar incidents and could have or should have taken steps to protect you. This is a difficult standard.
So, if you are the victim of a crime at a business establishment, you should contact an attorney right away so witnesses can be interviewed and a crime history can be established.
