Someone today asked me about liability for domestic partners. They were registered as domestic partners and buying a new car. How much insurance did they need to protect the assets of both partners?
I told them that they may both be responsible, however, I have not seen any cases dealing with this yet. Since they will have the same rights and responsibilities as any other married couple, liability will flow to both. Based on that, and with other concerns they had, I tecommended an umbrella policy. It should cost you between $200 and $300 and will provide added piece of mind.
Of course, I referred them to my prior post on the amount of insurance that you need. This is a perfect example of how each situation is different and each person has to consider their own situation in determining how much insurance is right for them!
