As you know from reading my blog, insurance follows the vehicle, generally. But, this is just a general rule. But a reader wants to know, if you drive your friend’s car, are you covered?
The policyholder, or named insured, can still file a claim. However, you need to be careful. While most policies will cover anyone driving your vehicle. This is the general rule.
But, some policies, especially from “non standard” carriers, only cover the named insured and anyone else named as an additional insured. Thus, if you drive your friend’s car, his policy may not cover you. Then you would need your own policy, which usually covers you if you are driving someone else’s vehicle. The coverage is then secondary, but becomes primary because there is no other policy.
So, before driving a friend’s car, make sure you have checked his policy, and make sure you have checked your own policy so that you are covered!
