I damaged someone’s car and they got an estimate that is high. Can I make them get another estimate?
No. You are obligated to pay the reasonable cost of repairs. If someone gets an estimate from a reputable body shop, you are going to be responsible for paying that cost, plus loss of use or rental. There are some obvious things to look for. If someone has a 72 Pinto and they are putting on brand new parts, you have an argument that this is not reasonable. But, if the car is less than 4 years old and they want a new bumper, you are wasting your time by arguing with them over it. Most small claims court judges will give them the new bumper. You would be better off trying to negotiate payments than arguing about the estimate and asking them to shop around to save you money.
