I was sitting in court today talking to a defense attorney friend of mine. Nice guy, we just disagree about the value of most of my cases. Actually, his employer, the insurance company, and I disagree about the value of most of my cases.
While we were chatting, we talked about uninsured motorist coverage (UM). He noticed something interesting: when he called for a quote, some insurance companies would only quote him a 30/60 UM policy. (As you know from my prior posts, that means $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident.) This was despite his request for higher limits and despite his having higher liability limits.
A word to the wise: when you are getting quotes, remember to make sure you are getting UM limits equal to your liability limits. UM protects you, not the other person. You want as much UM coverage as you can get. If they won’t give you more than 30/60, find a new insurance company.
