Q: I had a judgment against me. I paid it. Now I am still getting calls. How do I prove I paid it?
A: When you pay a judgment, obtain a satisfaction of judgment. This form gets filed with the court so that everyone knows the judgment was paid off. Of course, keep a copy of it as well. Then, show that to everyone who asks and that is your proof.
Remember, in California, interest accrues from the date of the judgment until it is paid off in full. Thus, if you miscalculate the amount you owe and you failr to obtain a satisfaction of judgment, the plaintiff could come after you again.
