I have written before about why you need to be wary of hiring these “attorney based services.” I also wrote about mortgage rescue companies. As you know, I believe you should only hire an attorney.
If these two articles did not convince you of that, the NY Times has a story today about homeowners being swindled. Some facts from the story to consider:
- One Deputy Attorney General in California has had over 300 complaints;
- California residents cannot pay up front except to an attorney;
- Most of the companies with complaints are run by former loan brokers.
I know from talking to my clients that it is scary out there. No one knows what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month or in 6 months. But, do not jump on the first person who calls you. Call around, talk to different people, including attorneys, and do your homework before you hire anyone, including me!
